27 dead as vehicles dive in rough hilly terrains

KATHMANDU, OCT 27 - Twenty-seven people died and many others were injured, some critically, in road accidents in Okhaldhunga, Nuwakot and Palpa districts in the past three days. Carrying passengers beyond the capacity during the festive season was the main cause of the accidents, said police.
In Okhaldhunga, 11 persons were dead while 10 others sustained injuries when a jeep swerved off the road and fell about 200 metres at Siddicharan Municipality-11 on Sunday morning. Four among the injured are reportedly in critical condition.
The overcrowded vehicle (Ba 5 Cha 5875) was headed for the district headquarters from Thulachhap. Seven died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries on their way to hospital. Nine of the deceased have been identified as Maniram Bhattarai, Tej Bahadur Basnet, Rampyari Basnet, Dohini Bhattarai, Sarita Khadka, Tika Basnet, Cholendra Khatri of Thulachhap, Apsara Dahal of Prapcha and driver Mana Kumar Rai of Baksa.
Police said preparations were being made to airlift three critically injured passengers to Kathmandu. The others are receiving care at Okhaldhunga Mission Hospital. In Nuwakot, an overcrowded bus skidded off the road and plunged 45 metres into a ravine at Belkot on Friday, killing 14 passengers including three foreigners.
The vehicle was headed for Syaphrubesi from the Capital. More than 60 people were injured. Most of them were home-bound for the Tihar festival.
Three of the deceased were from Kathmandu, three from Rasuwa, two each from Nuwakot and Okhaldhunga and one from Sindhupalchok. Two Israeli nationals apparently set out to Langtang for trekking met their tragic end. Identity of a deceased foreigner is yet to be ascertained.
In Palpa, two persons died when a truck hit a motorcycle at Dobhan-4 along Siddhartha Highway on Saturday night. Police said Khem Gurung and Padam Shrestha of Dobhan were killed. The victims were on their way to Butwal on the motorcycle.
