Govt directed to not implement CIAA’s directive

NOV 07 - The Finance Committee of the Legislature-Parliament has directed the government to not implement the directives issued by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to cancel the licences of Kabeli among other hydropower projects.

 A meeting of the finance committee held at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, on Friday issued such order after reaching a conclusion that the CIAA’s directives would dissuade the investments in hydropower projects and the nation would have to endure more load shedding hours.

The parliamentary committee has also objected to the statement given by CIAA Chief Lok Man Singh Karki over the jurisdiction of the parliamentary Finance Committee.

Earlier this week, CIAA Chief Karki had said that only parliamentary Good Governance and Monitoring Committee could summon the anti-graft body chief for clarifications.

“The parliamentary regulations give the right to summon any individual for discussion, statement or inquiry,” said Jwala, “No one can disregard these regulations of a sovereign parliament.”

The parliamentary committee summoned Karki for clarifications after the anti-graft body directed the government to terminate the licence of 37.6 MW Kabeli-A Hydropower Project .

Kabita A. Sharma new president of South Asian University

NEW DELHI, NOV 07 - The South Asian University (SAU) has appointed new President Kavita A. Sharma. Academician Sharma had previously worked as principal at Hindu College.

Sharma was appointed as SAU president on 3rd November, 2014. She was appointed by the Governing Board of the university as per its rules.

SAU has the students from Saarc member nations who are pursuing studies with hostel facilities. The University established in 2010 now offers post-graduate and doctoral programmes in 14 different disciplines including Sociology, Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biotechnology, law, among others.

The university, which currently operates from Akbar Bhawan in New Delhi, India, will shift in its own well-facilitated building. The government of India, as per the agreement between Saarc nations, has allocated 100 acre premises for the construction of the university building in Maidan Garhi, South Delhi.

Currently 400 students are studying in the university. More then 30 Nepali students have been obtaining education at the university.

Makwanpur bus accident: Police file murder case against driver

HETAUDA, NOV 03 - Police on Monday filed a case of murder against Rakesh Singh Tamang, the driver of Subha Shree Deluxe bus, whose reckless driving cost ten lives in an accident along the East-West Highway in Makwanpur district on Saturday morning.

Police claim that the Biratnagar-bound Subha Shree Deluxe bus (Na 4 Kha 5448) collided head-on with Metro Deluxe (Na 5 Kha 4841) en route to Kathmandu from Ilam because of Tamang’s reckless driving.

Tamang, 31, is a resident of Hetauda Municipality-15.  He will face jail term of 2-10 years, as demanded by the police, if proven guilty.

Ten persons, including a Russian national, were killed and dozens were injured when two passenger buses collided at Basamadi in Hetauda of Makwanpur district early Saturday morning.

Tamang was later arrested on the same day from Hetauda-9. Police claim that the driver was still stinking of alcohol when he was arrested in the evening. Police has also been claiming that Tamang had consumed alcohol, during meal break, at Ramnagar in Chitwan on the day of accident.

Meanwhile, the Makwanpur District Court has remanded Tamang into seven more days of custody for further investigation. Based on the statements of the passengers of the bus, the injured and the nature of the accident, police believe that the accident was a result of the driver’s negligence.according to ekantipur.

NC, UML float 7-state model at PDCC meet UCPN (M) disapproves joint model

KATHMANDU, NOV 03 - Ruling parties—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—have jointly floated a proposal of seven-state model at the meeting of Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee (PDCC) in the Capital on Monday.

Major opposition party UCPN (Maoist) and other Madhesh-based parties have disapproved the NC-UML proposal on federalism .

Tabling the proposal at today’s PDCC meeting, Prime Minister and NC President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli said that the proposal of the two parties, however, was not final. “We have started deliberations so as to draft new constitution by January 22,” said NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel quoting Koirala and Oli, “Do not take it as the final proposal.”

Emerging from the PDCC meeting, UCPN (M) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal remarked that the NC-UML proposal did not have ‘smell of federalism ’. “This can be understood as converting the five developmental regions into seven states or reducing the 14 zones into seven,” Dahal said.

He accused the two ruling parties of bringing in the proposal on federalism by retreating from the past agreements. The meeting of the PDCC has been put off for half an hour today.according to ekantipur

NAC receives Y12 aircraft from China

KATHMANDU, NOV 03 - After four-month delay, the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) , on Monday received a Chinese-made 18-seater Y12e aircraft as part of a six- aircraft deal between Nepal and China. The twin-engine turboprop utility plane is a gift from China to Nepal and it has been named “Koilee”.

The Nepali registration mark 9N-AKS aircraft built by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation, China landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at the afternoon. With this new aircraft , the ailing national flag carrier boasts four aircraft , including two Twin Otter and a MA60, on its fleet to serve the domestic sector.

The delivery of the first batch of Y12e had been originally set for June 30. However, taking a lesson from the two-month delay in getting its MA60 aircraft into service due to inadequate paperwork, NAC has pushed back the delivery date of the Y12e to have ample time to prepare the necessary documentation.

The MA60, which arrived in Kathmandu on April 27, was forced to take an extended rest at TIA as NAC officials scrambled to get various documents in order, of which they said they were not aware as requirements had changed in the 27 years since they last acquired new aircraft .according to ekantipure
